Today the Republicans in the Michigan Senate and the Michigan House voted to cut the pay of Michigan construction workers. They decided that Prevailing Wage should be eliminated. This will cut construction wages for state funded construction. This will put less trained employees out building our roads, schools, and government buildings. Michigan experimented with eliminating the Prevailing Wage in the early 1990’s and then reinstated it because we needed the talented construction workers who do quality work. Some other states have repealed Prevailing Wage recently and studies have shown that it does not save any money. In fact, Florida has re-instituted Prevailing Wage because they didn’t like the outcomes.
The Prevailing Wage law assures working men and women are paid fairly and Michigan taxpayers receive quality work in public projects. As your representative I will vote to restore it.
